My project aimed to focus on what it means for international groups to perform the cultural practices of a small-scale society in a distant locale culture.  To do this, I became a participant-observer drummer in the Tahitian group, “Otea Api” located in Fremont, CA. “Otea Api” is a Tahitian culture group that practices Tahitian drum and dance.  However, majority of the students studying at this school are not of Tahitian descent. I aim to understand how the idea of authenticity plays into the running of the school and what draws non-natives to want to learn Tahitian culture.
